Beginning of Rachel's Pottery Career
Cheryl Goins opened Pottery 101 in 2008, and the gallery quickly became a cornerstone of Salisbury's arts community. When Cheryl decided to retire, she sold Pottery 101 to Rachel Gunsch in December of 2024, marking the 16th anniversary of the studio’s founding.
Rachel first took a pottery class at age fifteen and immediately fell in love with the craft. She continued to take classes at Pottery 101 until she turned sixteen. Determined to become more involved, Rachel asked Cheryl for a job. Initially hesitant to hire someone so young, Cheryl was persuaded by Rachel’s persistence and encouragement from her grandmother. Cheryl decided to take a chance on her, and Rachel began working at Pottery 101.
While working at the gallery, Rachel was able to use the studio after hours to further develop her skills. Cheryl became her ceramic mentor, guiding her through every aspect of the craft, from centering the clay to creating handles and maintaining the kiln.
Rachel worked at Pottery 101 until she left for school in Asheville at Warren Wilson College, where she studied art. After graduating in 2020, she returned to Salisbury and became a full-time artist. Rachel eventually started teaching one-day pottery classes at Pottery 101, sharing her passion for the craft with others. She loves teaching and will be the instructor for the new eight-week sessions offered at the gallery.
Rachel is honoring Cheryl's legacy in Salisbury, while also making the gallery her own. She has expanded the class offerings and introduced monthly featured artist exhibitions, bringing fresh energy to this beloved local pottery hub.
